Okay so I’m sitting here in my office totally shell-shocked after getting off the phone with a transmission specialist in Al Quoz who told me my 2017 A4’s S-tronic needs a new mechatronics unit and that the total bill with labor and fluid is going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 dirhams, and I honestly don’t know if I should be crying or just accepting my fate at this point. The car started throwing up the “gearbox malfunction” warning last week and went into limp mode on my way to work, which was terrifying enough, but I was sort of hoping it would be something minor like a sensor or maybe just a software glitch that could be reset. I’ve been doing some reading to get a better sense of what I’m dealing with and came across a pretty detailed breakdown that focuses on understanding Audi transmission repair costs in the UAE, and it seems like my quote isn’t completely out of left field compared to what others have paid, but I’m still struggling to wrap my head around spending that much on a car that’s only worth maybe 45k now. The shop says the clutch packs are also showing some wear and recommends doing them at the same time to save on labor, which bumps it up even more, but I’m terrified that if I just do the mechatronics now and the clutches fail six months later I’ll be paying double. Has anyone here been through this exact scenario with the DL382 gearbox and can tell me if that price is reasonable for the UAE market, or should I get a second opinion from someone else before I commit? I’m really torn between fixing it properly and just cutting my losses and selling it as-is, but I’ve had this car for years and I’m pretty attached to it.
